Milton Keynes is famous for being a modern, planned city and known for it’s modern layout and roundabouts. But, the area has a long-standing connection to woodlands, rural life and traditional fireside living; the area’s connection to wood, fire and countryside living goes back much further than the 1960s. Long before MK became the city we know today, it was made up of small villages and rural communities, where timber, thatch and open fires were part of everyday life. With nearby countryside spots like the Brickhills, plus local woodland walks and green spaces across MK, wood has always played a big part in how people heat their homes, cook food, and make outdoor spaces feel welcoming.
In the earlier days, many homes and buildings in the surrounding villages would have used timber framing and traditional materials, which looked beautiful but also meant fire was a real risk. Like many parts of rural England, wood wasn’t just used for building – it was also one of the main fuels for heating homes and cooking food. From old cottages and farmhouses in surrounding villages to newer homes across the city, log burners and open fires are still a popular choice — especially when the colder months roll in. Whether it’s for keeping the house cosy, fuelling a pub fire, or stocking up for winter, firewood remains a proper staple around Milton Keynes… and we’re proud to keep that tradition going with quality logs and fuel delivered locally.
Before the big expansion of Milton Keynes, the area was surrounded by woodlands and farmland, and timber would have been used locally for everything from fencing and construction to firewood and fuel. There’s even evidence of charcoal burning in parts of the wider area, supplying trades like blacksmithing and metalworking.
Today, MK might be built with modern materials and wide open spaces, but the love of a real fire hasn’t gone anywhere. From cosy evenings at home to pub fires, outdoor fire pits and log burners, firewood is still a staple across Milton Keynes – and we’re proud to keep that tradition going with reliable local delivery and quality fuel.
